Characteristics of Future Fit Teams

I’ve had a few interesting conversations, with a bunch of different people, about what makes up an effective team recently. The answer to some extent is contextual - depending on the organisation and team - however there are some characteristics that seem to come up time and again.

So here, in no particular order, is my list of characteristics that makes an effective and future ready team. Future fit teams are:

  • Smaller, more distributed but highly connected
  • Flatter in structure - take initiative and are interpreneurial
  • A balance of technical skills with creativity, and follow their intuition
  • Adaptive to change faster - respond to changing team and customer expectations
  • Placing real value on diversity and have more women in senior leadership roles
  • Great at telling stories and focusing on ‘why’
  • Democratizing learning and encourage growth from within
  • Exhibiting personal and emotional intelligence
  • Tech savvy and willing to experiment with new technologies
  • Demonstrating adaptive intelligence and can solve complex problems as a unit

Of course this isn’t a ‘complete’ list - and there are plenty of other desirable attributes - but based on conversations I’ve had these are the characteristics that come up most often.
