Day 1 Morning - #NZCIO Summit 2014

After a whirlwind weather night in Auckland the #NZCIO got underway this morning.

Xero got honourable mention as New Zealand’s Google - with its share price continuing to rise. Rod did NZ entrepreneurs proud at the recent EY Global Entrepreneur Awards.

The increase of tech listing on NZX is good news for New Zealand. The talent market is starting to get tight with poaching between companies starting to show.

Frank Gens talked about the rapid evolution of what IDC call the 3rd platform. The 3rd platform is no longer emerging, it’s now real and rapidly evolving. Most of the predictions made in 2007 have now materialised and growth in these new platforms is almost exponential. The 3rd platform is an opportunity for CIOs to become business leaders, not just the technology experts.

The next few years will see a series of ‘battles’ happening amongst players in the third platform - cloud, mobility, big data and social business. The 3rd platform foundation will continue to build out and mature over the next 5 years. Vendor and partner selection will be crucial as many players continue to battle in the market place.

The opportunities to build new business services and innovate on the 3rd platform will be huge - this will redefine how many traditional IT organisations operate.

Platforms a consolidating at a rapid rate - many organisations are looking at the ‘open source’ aggregation with 80% of new cloud apps being hosted by the top 6 platform providers.

80% of new cloud apps will be big data intensive. Developers will pick the platforms that allow them to tap into that dats to build new apps and products. Industry specific platforms - for example in genomics - are also emerging in parallel to commercial players, serving the needs of specific industries. The last 12 months has seen huge names enter into this space including the likes of GE, Ford, Kaiser Permanente and others. This change is about IT - it’s redefinition and disruption of whole industries.

In the next 10 years we may see the emergence of an ‘Amazon’ across a range of industries - reshaping whole markets. The role of the modern CIO is to help their organisations adapt to this change. New 'killer apps’ will become industry specific - creating new value. This is a shift away from the traditional ERP, CRM application stacks. This opportunity will see a 3x expansion of the cloud developer communities. Citizen or hobbyist developers are growing at almost 3 times the rate as professional developers and they will be driving most of the innovation. These Citizen Developers will be Subject Matter Experts in specific industries and will be the new Gates, Jobs and Zukerberg’s of the 3rd platform. Key take aways are around Scale, Consolidation, Innovation and Value Migration.
