CIO Summit Morning 1

CIO Summit kicked off in Auckland this morning.

The keynote by Crawford Del Prete contained some interesting insights into some of the data behind the IT industries’ growth over the last 2 decades. The focus on the ’third platform’ feels a bit tired - noting that it’s was a strong focus of last years CIO Summit and has also been done to death by Gartner and IDC. Sure, the technologies and markets in this space have grown but the underlying messages for CIOs don’t seem to have changed too much in the last year. The Q&A session did offer some good insights into what’s changing and happening around the world.

Paul Strong from VMware talked about the role of the CIO - focussing on what the ‘I’ actually stands for and the way that 1000’s of applications are challenging traditional IT operations. Key trends in infrastructure include standardisation, virtualise and 'containerise’ to enable automation. This frees up organisations to focus on differentiation.
